Best Time to Rebrand Your Nonprofit (and When Not To)

In this post, I'm sharing the best (and worst!) times to rebrand your nonprofit. Plus how to plan around a milestone events, anniversary, and capital campaigns without overwhelming your team.

I’ve worked with 35+ nonprofits to level up their visual branding, and this is the question I hear most often:

“When is the right time to rebrand our nonprofit?”

Most development directors I talk to know their brand has needed work for a while. But there’s always a campaign, a board report, or funder deadline that takes priority.

So branding waits until it’s suddenly urgent, usually right before giving season.

Which feels like good timing…a new look, right when everyone’s paying attention? Makes sense.

It’s also the most expensive timing mistake I see nonprofits make.

Because the real question isn’t when to rebrand…it’s when to launch.

So let’s answer both: the best months to do this work, the season to avoid, how long a rebrand actually takes, and how to time it around your anniversary, campaign, or big event.

The Best Time to Rebrand a Nonprofit: January Through September

The best time to launch your brand is January through September.

These months give you and your team space to focus on your long-term goals and give thoughtful feedback, without year-end fundraising pulling your attention. It’s when most orgs have a bit more breathing room to pause, reflect, and plan ahead.

Here’s the hard and fast rule I tell all my clients:
Do NOT launch a new brand in Q4.

October through December is giving season.

This is when competition for attention is at an all-time high. People are bombarded with messages, inboxes are flooded, and you want people to recognize your brand immediately. That’s not the time to introduce a new logo.

Launching a new brand in Q4 risks confusing your donors right when you want them to feel confident and clear about supporting you.

Plus, your team doesn’t need the added stress of using a new brand style while also working toward year-end goals. It’s too much.

So if you’re reading this in August-October: plan now to start your brand work in January. If you’re mid-year: you’ve got a golden window to launch a refreshed brand by September.

Should You Rebrand Before an Anniversary or Campaign?

The short answer is yes, but launch it before the moment, not during it.

If you’re heading into a milestone, it’s an incredible opportunity to bring fresh energy and visibility to your work. A milestone moment might be a 10th anniversary, a new building, expanded services, a name change, new leadership, a capital campaign, or a strategic plan you just finished and are ready to act on.

A refreshed brand signals growth and momentum, and it’s an easy way to get people excited about your nonprofit’s next chapter.

Take Kids Hub, for example.

They signed up for their Brand Level-Up in January 2025 so they could refresh their look before their 10-year anniversary in October.

The new brand helped them show up with confidence and made all their anniversary materials so much easier to create.

Their development director, Erica, told me:

“Before working with Lauren, our brand was kind of a free-for-all…you wouldn’t know our designs were all from the same organization. Now, every single thing we do, anyone can look at it and say ‘that’s Kids Hub!’ Everything is streamlined, and everyone on our team knows the expectation. Our new logo makes us more recognizable to the community and more legitimate to our donors.”

So yes — rebranding before your big event is smart. Just build in cushion.

I recommend having your brand identity and key marketing templates finalized at least 2 months before your event. That way we can create the graphics, signage, and materials you need without a scramble.

One extra tip: Use the rebrand process as a way to build loyalty and excitement with your donors, sponsors, and partners! In your launch plan we build in strategic times to give them a sneak peek at your new logo before announcing it publicly. This helps them feel more invested in your nonprofit’s next chapter and excited for what’s to come!

How Long Does a Nonprofit Rebrand Take?

The Brand Level-Up takes about 4 months from kickoff to launch. Here’s roughly how that breaks down:

Month 1: SPARK Strategy Session

Before anything visual happens, we get clear on who you are, what you stand for, and how you want to be seen. You’ll leave with your brand strategy documented — the why behind every design decision that follows. This is also the piece that makes your internal case easier: it’s what you hand your ED or board when they ask what they’re paying for.

Months 1–2: Logo and Visual Identity

Logo suite, color palette, typography, icons, and photography direction. Structured feedback rounds with clear deadlines, so you’re never guessing what I need from you.

Month 3: Marketing Template Toolkit

Once your brand is approved, we build your Canva brand kit and templates for the pieces you actually make every month. This is the part that keeps working after we’re done — anyone on your team can open a template and produce something that looks like you.

Month 4: Launch Plan

You’ll get a recorded team training, a week-by-week rollout plan for each platform, and ready-to-go launch assets in your new brand style so your audience recognizes you right away and understands the why behind your new brand.

Then add your own cushion. If you’re launching around an anniversary, a new building, or a campaign, aim to have your identity and templates finalized at least two months before the date.

Working backward: an October event means starting in February. That’s exactly what Kids Hub did.

Don’t Forget to Plan Around Your Board!

Here’s the timing constraint that always takes longer than you think: internal approvals.

If you need approval before you can sign anything, your real start date isn’t when you’re ready — it’s the meeting where the decision gets made. And if your board meets quarterly, that’s a whole extra quarter to account for.

So work backward twice. First from your milestone to your project start date. Then from your project start date to the board meeting where you’ll need a yes.

If you want help building that case, the strategy phase is designed to give you exactly that language. But you can also just ask me to join the call with your board too – I’m happy to help you prepare and present!

But What If Our Team Doesn’t Have Time Right Now?

This is the fear I hear most, and it’s usually bigger than the budget question.

Here’s what Paige from Kids Hub had to say about working together:

“Lauren’s process was so easy and efficient. It was easy to communicate, I always knew exactly what she needed from us at each step, but I also had the freedom to make suggestions along the way. I thought it would be much more time-intensive for me, but Lauren gave me all the tools I needed to get feedback from our team, and it was way easier than I expected. Everything was so efficient and never felt like a huge lift!”

That’s the goal…to make this feel clear, organized, and doable, even with a packed calendar.

You’ll never be left wondering what’s next or what I need from you. I give clear deadlines, specific feedback prompts, and if something comes up, we’ve got built-in flexibility to adjust. If you’re planning around a big campaign or celebration, we’ll build a timeline that works for you.

But that flexibility works best when we start early. The sooner we talk, the more room we have to tailor the process and avoid a last-minute scramble.

Not Sure If Now Is the Right Time? Let’s Map Out Your Timeline

If you’ve got an anniversary, grand opening, or a campaign launch coming up – the useful question isn’t whether you need a rebrand. It’s whether you still have time.

Book a free 25-minute call and we’ll work backward from your date together. You’ll leave with:

  • A real timeline based around your milestone, your board’s meeting schedule, and the latest date you could start and still make it
  • A straight answer on whether the Brand Level-Up makes sense for your org right now, or whether you’re better off waiting a cycle
  • Language for your board to frame branding as infrastructure to grow through this milestone moment (not just decoration)

We’ll look at where your brand stands now, where it needs to be by your next big moment, and what it would actually take to get there. Whether that’s a few targeted fixes or a full level-up, you’ll leave with a clear path forward.
